Introduced from the eastern dialects into the standard language in the 19th century to replace the Western Finnish word ehtoo. === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˈiltɑ/, [ˈil̪t̪ɑ̝] Rhymes: -iltɑ Syllabification(key): il‧ta Hyphenation(key): il‧ta === Noun === ilta evening ==== Usage notes ==== The concepts ilta (“evening”) and yö (“night”) are defined slightly differently in Finnish and English. yö (“night”) is generally regarded as the period of day normally devoted for sleeping (i.e. roughly the time between 10/11 p.m. and 6/7 a.m.). The time between 5/6 p.m. and 10/11 p.m. is referred to as ilta, but in English it is often called night (e.g. "I have a meeting tonight"). As with all words for times of day (except päivä) in Finnish, the adessive case (illalla) is normally used when talking about events that will take place or took place in the evening. The essive case (iltana) is used instead, however, if there is a determiner like tämä (“this”), viime (“last”) or ensi (“next”); if the day is specified otherwise, either the essive or adessive case can be used (the former is more common).
