iltapäivä

التعريفات والمعاني

== Finnish == === Etymology === Compound of ilta (“evening”) +‎ päivä (“day”). === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˈiltɑˌpæi̯ʋæ/, [ˈil̪t̪ɑ̝ˌpæi̯ʋæ] Rhymes: -æiʋæ Syllabification(key): il‧ta‧päi‧vä Hyphenation(key): ilta‧päivä === Noun === iltapäivä An afternoon, roughly the period between 12 noon and 6 p.m. ==== Usage notes ==== As with all words for times of day (except päivä) in Finnish, the adessive case (iltapäivällä) is normally used when talking about events that will take place or took place in the afternoon. The essive case (iltapäivänä) is used instead, however, if there is a determiner like tämä (“this”), viime (“last”) or ensi (“next”); if the day is specified otherwise, either the essive or adessive case can be used (the former is more common). As usual, other uses, e.g. when postponing events (allative) or with asti (“until”) (illative), may use other locative cases. ==== Declension ==== ==== Derived terms ==== === Further reading === “iltapäivä”, in Kielitoimiston sanakirja [Dictionary of Contemporary Finnish]‎[1] (in Finnish) (online dictionary, continuously updated), Kotimaisten kielten keskuksen verkkojulkaisuja 35, Helsinki: Kotimaisten kielten tutkimuskeskus (Institute for the Languages of Finland), 2004–, retrieved 2 July 2023
