=== Etymology ===
From Old Frisian [Term?], from Proto-West Germanic *ailid, from Proto-Germanic *ailidaz (“fire”). The fact that it displaced the descendant of Old Frisian fiūr has been ascribed to the reinforcing influence of Old Norse eldr. In other West Germanic varieties the opposite occurred, compare Saterland Frisian Fjúur, West Frisian fjoer, English fire, Low German Füür.
