Uncertain. Possibly from either:
Proto-Italic *hōrnos, from earlier *hojōrnos, from *ho- (“this”) + *jōros (“year”) + *-nos, medial element from Proto-Indo-European *yóh₁r̥ (“year”), compare hodiē, hodiernus, first part of the formation finds parallel in German heuer, but notably with the determiner declined, cognate with Latin hōra, English year;
or perhaps, less likely, ho- + vē̆rnus (“of spring”).
