Unknown. Originally meant “wicket, gate” (in western Savonian and Ostrobothnian dialects). Most senses have developed through “grate, grating” (perhaps influenced by German Gitter, English lattice, which also went from “grate, grating; grid, mesh” → “grating, lattice (in scientific senses)”); “gate” (in a field effect transistor) from “grid” (in a vacuum tube).
