From Proto-Finnic *halgët'ak (compare Ingrian haleta, Veps haugeta), possibly derived from Proto-Finno-Permic *šalke- (compare Erzya чулгомс (čulgoms)). Equivalent to halje- + -ta, in which the stem is also seen in halki, halko and halkoa.
