Equivalent to haka + -nen, first part from Finnish haka (“hook”), from Swedish haka (“catch”), dialectal form of hake (“catch; latch”), from Old Swedish haki (“hook; grappling hook”), from Old Norse haki, from Proto-Germanic *hakô (“hook”), from Proto-Indo-European *keg-, *keng- (“peg; hook”). Last part -nen from Finnish -nen (“forms diminutives nouns or terms expressing affection”), variant of -inen, from Proto-Finnic *-inën (“-ish”).
