Borrowed from a South Slavic language, ultimately from Proto-Slavic *gъrstь; compare Old Church Slavonic гръсть (grŭstĭ, “fist, handful”), Serbo-Croatian grst (“handful”), Bulgarian гръст (grǎst). An old borrowing, considering the rendering of *-s- as -sh- and *-ъ- as -u-.
