From a zero-grade stem of Proto-Indo-European *gʰrewbʰ-. LEW suggests a relation to Old High German grob (“thick, strong”) and Proto-Slavic *grǫbъ (“coarse; rude”), from *gru(m)b- (with nasal infix). Cognate with Latvian grubulis.
