According to different sources, may be related to gopel (“a dirt mass”), Old Norse gaupn (“gowpen”) or Southern Sami gåbloe (“lung”) (compare Finnish kupla (“bubble”)). (fireweed): May be from Southern Sami boeltʼaajjan-gåbloe (“fireweed”), literally “bear lung”. The form bjønngoppel (from bjønn) is also attested (in northern dialects).
