From Proto-Albanian *sūša, from earlier *sūsa, from Proto-Indo-European *suHsos (compare Sanskrit सूषा (sūṣā́, “parturient woman”)), variant of *suHnús (compare English son). Compare also the related Romanian ghiuj.
Alternatively, from Proto-Albanian *źýśii̯a-, from older *sū́sii̯a-, from Proto-Indo-European *súHsii̯o- (“progenitor”).
