From Proto-Common Turkic *ked- (“to put on”), Proto-Turkic *ged- (“to put on”).
Cognate with Turkish giymek, Crimean Tatar kiymek, Uzbek kiymoq, Uyghur كىيمەك (kiymek), Kyrgyz кийүү (kiyüü), Bashkir кейеү (keyew), Tatar кию (kiyü), etc. Possibly cognate with Old Turkic 𐰚𐰓𐰢𐰠𐰏 (kd²ml²g /kedimlig/, “decorated horse cloth”).
