From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gáubtei, *gúbtei, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰubʰ-, or possibly Proto-Indo-European *bʰewgʰ- due to hypothesized metathesis. Related to Latvian gubt, Polish giąć, Russian гнуть (gnutʹ) and possibly Old English ġēap, Albanian gaboj, Ancient Greek κῦφος (kûphos).
