From Latin faenum (“hay”), which derives from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁(y)-no-, from *dʰeh₁(y)-. Another proposed etymology is a Vulgar Latin *flēnum, from a blending of flōs (“flower”) and faenum. Cognate with Sicilian frenu.
