From Proto-Uralic *säppä. Cognates include Finnish sappi, Estonian sapp and Erzya сэпе (sëpe). Its current form is the result of rebracketing an earlier form *ep possessive-suffixed with -e, compare vese, zúza, ipa, and possibly apa.
