Uncertain, thought to come from *eperyə (-y- preserved in dialectal epërj, and in eperjes ‘strawberry patch’), from *eperɣə, from Proto-Ugric *äppärĕ-kə (“strawberry”), from Proto-Uralic *äppɜ-rɜ-kɜ.
Cognates include Western Mansi ӓпрӓ (äprä) (Lower Lozva), [script needed] (ǟpėrėχ) (Pelym) and Southern Mansi [script needed] (äpriˈjėχ) (Tavda)
Also compared to Ket ээль (éèlʲ, “lingonberry, bilberry, cranberry”) and Yug эфыр (éfɨr, “cranberry”) (Proto-Yeniseian *epʰʌλ (“cranberry”)) by CHYD.
