From Middle Irish eréne (“chick, pullet”) + -óg, from a derivative of Proto-Celtic *yarā (whence Welsh iâr (“hen”) and Cornish/Breton yar), perhaps originally *ɸiɸeros if related to Latin pīpiō (“to cheep”) and Sanskrit पिप्पका (pippakā, “a species of bird”) Cognate with Scottish Gaelic eireag.
