Inherited from Ottoman Turkish طورمق (durmak), from Old Anatolian Turkish طورمق (durmaq), from Proto-Turkic *tur- (“to stand”). Cognate with Kazakh тұру (tūru), Turkmen durmak, Crimean Tatar turmaq, Uzbek turmoq, Uyghur تۇرماق (turmaq), Azerbaijani durmaq, Tatar toru, Chuvash тӑр (tăr), Gagauz durmaa.
