Of uncertain origin; possibly a Mediterranean loan of sound-symbolic origin (or imitative of hitting a hard object), and cognate with Ancient Greek κόκκος (kókkos, “kernel”), though this is rejected by Furnee. Compare Asturian cuezcu.
