Possibly from *caracōlus, via metathesis, dissimilation, and change of stress of Vulgar Latin *cochleār, Latin cochlea (“snail”), from Ancient Greek κοχλίας (kokhlías, “spiral, snail shell”). Cognate with Spanish and Portuguese caracol (“snail”). Compare with cullera (“spoon”).
