Borrowed from Middle French breche, from Old French breche, bresche (“a breach, an opening, crack”), from Frankish *breka (“a breach, break”), from Proto-Germanic *brekō (“a breaking, breach, fallow ground”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰreg- (“to break, crack”).
