From Middle High German brūsen, from Old High German *brūsen, from Proto-Germanic *brausijaną (“to break; crack; crackle”). More at bruise. The sense "to shower" is a back-formation from noun Brause, in turn from the "to make dissonant noise" sense of this verb.
