Inherited from Sanskrit भीति (bhīti, “fear”) with some derivational suffix, or an l-variant of Sanskrit भीर (bhīra, “intimidating”). Cognate with Indus Kohistani [script needed] (bhīl, “fear”), Chilisso [script needed] (bihil, “fear”).
