Spanish -a (feminine suffix)), from bakli (“broken by bending; bent; crooked”), picturesque illustrating the incapacity of the male sex organ to exercise an erection. The connotation of being “broken” led homosexuals around the 1970s to use other words such as badap, bading, marikona, etc. to refer to homosexuals. Compare also the analogy with English straight (“heterosexual”) and bent (“homosexual”). Alternate theories for the etymology include: From blend of babae +‎ lalaki. From bakla (“fear; worry; perturbed”). See etymology 2. Perhaps attributed to “cowardice” or “fearfulness”.
