From Ottoman Turkish آولامق (avlamak, “to hunt, to deceive, to dupe”), from آو (av, “the chase, hunting of any kind, game, prey”), from Proto-Turkic *āb (“the act of hunting or that which is hunted”), equivalent to av (“hunt, prey”) + -la- (verb forming suffix) + -mak. Cognates with Azerbaijani ovlamaq.
