From Proto-Central Philippine *qalsəm with elision of /l/, from Proto-Philippine *qalsəm, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qaləsəm. Compare Kapampangan aslam, Central Bikol alsom, Aklanon aslom, Cebuano aslom, Ilocano alsem, Limos Kalinga alsom (“pomelo”), Malay asam, Maranao asem, Tausug asam (“tamarind”).
