From French, from Late Latin arepennis (“surface of a field”), from Gaulish *are-penno- (“end, extremity of a field”); the first element is from Proto-Celtic *(p)ari-, *are, from Proto-Indo-European *per-; the second element, *penis (“head, tip”) is of uncertain origin, but probably related to *kʷennom (“head”).
