Inherited from Ottoman Turkish آلداتمق (aldatmak), causative of آلدامق (aldamak), from Proto-Turkic *ālda- (“to trick, fool”), a derivation from Proto-Turkic *āl (“device, trick, deceit; to deceive”). Cognate with Old Uyghur 𐽰𐽰𐾁𐾀𐽰𐽹𐽰𐽷 (ʾʾltʾmʾk /altamaḳ/), Azerbaijani aldatmaq etc.
