From Ancient Greek Σᾰμᾰΐᾱς (Sămăḯās), from Biblical Hebrew שְׁמַעְיָה (shema'yá, Šəmaʿyā́, “Shemaiah”), from שָׁמַע (shamá', šāma, “to hear”) + יָהּ (yáh, Yāh, “two letters of the Tetragrammaton”), literally "God heard".
