From Middle High German schiune, from Old High German scugin(n)a, from a Proto-Germanic *sku(w)enjō-, for which see Proto-Germanic *skūrō (“shelter, shack”) for more. The word was originally chiefly East Central German versus otherwise predominant Scheuer (Austro-Bavarian also Stadel). Scheune is reinforced by cognate Low German Schüün.
