== Dutch == === Etymology === First attested as nivelen in 1146. Perhaps from Old Dutch *niuwal, derived from either Proto-Germanic *niwialhô- (“hollow, low-lying land”) (cognate to Old English niwel (“leaning forward, steep”)) or *niwialha- (“new house”). Local folk etymology erroneously interprets the toponym as a compound of nieuw (“new”) and the hydronym Waal. Compare Aalst, Elst, Maasniel, Niel, Niel-bij-As, Nivele and Waldniel. === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /niu̯ˈaːl/ Hyphenation: Nieuw‧aal Rhymes: -aːl === Proper noun === Nieuwaal n a village in Zaltbommel, Gelderland, Netherlands ==== Derived terms ==== Nieuwaler Nieuwaals === References === van Berkel, Gerard; Samplonius, Kees (2018), Nederlandse plaatsnamen verklaard (in Dutch), Mijnbestseller.nl, →ISBN
