== Dutch ==
=== Etymology ===
First attested as nivelen in 1146. Perhaps from Old Dutch *niuwal, derived from either Proto-Germanic *niwialhô- (“hollow, low-lying land”) (cognate to Old English niwel (“leaning forward, steep”)) or *niwialha- (“new house”). Local folk etymology erroneously interprets the toponym as a compound of nieuw (“new”) and the hydronym Waal. Compare Aalst, Elst, Maasniel, Niel, Niel-bij-As, Nivele and Waldniel.
