(colony) Compound of nieuw (“new”) + Amsterdam (Dutch port city in Holland).
(Drenthe) First attested as Nieuw Amsterdam in 1853. Compound of nieuw (“new”) + Amsterdam. The settlement was constructed by a company from Amsterdam. See also Dutch Low Saxon Nei-Amsterdam.
