== German == === Etymology 1 === Borrowed from French nègre, ultimately from Latin niger. Cognate with Hunsrik Negher. ==== Pronunciation ==== IPA(key): /ˈneːɡɐ/ IPA(key): /ˈneːɡər/ (mainly Switzerland and conservative Austro-Bavarian) Hyphenation: Ne‧ger Rhymes: -eːɡɐ ==== Noun ==== Neger m (strong, genitive Negers, plural Neger, diminutive Negerlein n or Negerchen n, feminine Negerin) (dated, now offensive, usually derogatory) black; negro; nigger (dated) cue card ===== Usage notes ===== Usage of Neger has been declining since the 1950s. The word may still be used in a positive way by a small portion of the population, chiefly those born before 1950, but usually it has at least a mildly derogatory tone to it. Using Neger to address a black stranger is always highly offensive. In modern public speech the word as such is considered discriminatory and derogatory, and is therefore avoided, except by the far right. ===== Declension ===== ===== Synonyms ===== Afrikaner Farbiger (in a narrower sense) Mohr (dated) Negro Nigger (offensive, ethnic slur) Schwarzer ===== Hypernyms ===== Farbiger (in a broader sense) ===== Derived terms ===== ==== See also ==== Afroamerikaner dunkelfarbig, dunkelhäutig negrid, Negrider, negroid, Negroider === Etymology 2 === From a Low German variant of Näher ==== Proper noun ==== Neger m or f (proper noun, surname, masculine genitive Negers or (with an article) Neger, feminine genitive Neger, plural Negers or Neger) a surname originating as an occupation === References ===
