From Malay negeri, from Classical Malay negeri (“settlement”), from Sanskrit नगरी (nagarī, “city”). Doublet of nagari and negara.
The sense of district was reinforced as translation of Japanese 地方(ちほう) (chihō, “district, province, area”).
