== Norwegian Nynorsk == === Alternative forms === Haukelid (obsolete) === Etymology === Probably form Hauk +‎ -e- +‎ li. The first part by surface analysis is from hauk (“hawk”) and li(d) (“mountainside”), probably not referring to hawks, but rather to rough-legged buzzards (compare to toponyms like Haukås). First attested in 1585 (spelled as Hogelid), but also attested in a compound Haukalydhabøø in 1505, whence Haukelibø. Folk etymology attributes the name to a local king Hauk, who is said to have ruled the area together with kings Greip from Oleim, Hauk from Haugegrav and Greive from Greivshaug, at the pagan temple in Gudgard, which is said to be later destroyed by St. Olav.
