From Middle Irish Eógan, from Primitive Irish ᚔᚃᚑᚌᚓᚅᚔ (ivogeni, gen.sg.), from Proto-Celtic *Iwogenos (literally “yew-born”). Cognate with Scottish Gaelic Eòghann.
Sometimes conflated or confused with the etymologically unrelated name Eoin (“John”), with which the vocative/genitive form Eoghain is homophonous.
