Recorded as Aigrun in the Domesday Book, the actual origin of this placename is still uncertain. Perhaps it is a compound of Old English ēa (“river”) and the dative plural form of gāra (“gore, strip of land”) or, alternatively, a fossilised survival of Old English *ēagor (“water, sea”), whence eagre.
