=== Etymology ===
Medieval Latin, of unknown origin. First attested in Matthaeus Silvaticus, possibly identical to Matthaeus Platearius. Because both heavily employed Arabic sources it gave rise to speculations of Arabic origin; from words existing in Arabic, دَرَوْنَج (darawnaj, “leopardsbane”) is the closest candidate, whence also Doronicum descends. Other origins suggested include a derivation of Latin *arna (“lamb”), corrupt of agna, or a deformation of Latin ptarmica (“sneezewort”) from Ancient Greek πταρμική (ptarmikḗ, “sneezewort”), from πτάρνυμαι (ptárnumai, “to sneeze”).
