Some words ending in -ārnica are alternatively or better derived from an agentive noun in -ār + -nica. This could be done, for example, with pèkārnica (“bakery”), which could also be derived from pȅkār (“baker”); slàstičārnica (“sweetshop”), which could also be derived from slàstičār (“confectioner”); and kòžārnica (“tannery”), which is perhaps better derived from kȍžār (“tanner”). Similar examples are kòckārnica (“gambling house”), which may be better derived from kȍckār (“gambler”) than kȍcka (“die (in games)”); lònčārnica (“potter's shop”), from lònčār (“potter”) rather than lònac (“pot”); and zlàtārnica (“goldsmith's shop”), from zlàtār (“goldsmith”) rather than zlȃto (“gold”). But this cannot be applied to all such words; for example, rȉbār means “fisherman” rather than “fishmonger”, and kòtlār means “boiler maker” rather than “boiler tender” or similar.
