Coined by German cartographers Martin Waldseemüller and Matthias Ringmann in 1507 in their Cosmographiae Introductio, from a blend of Amerī̆cus (“Amerigo”) + Ancient Greek γῆ (gê, “earth, land”), literally “Land of Amerigo”.
