From earlier -hka-i (with later labialization, see -i), from a dialectal variant of -kka (-ka) + -i. The -h- may be from *-eh (see -e). The suffix has been compared to Erzya -шка (-ška) (comparative case suffix), likely from Proto-Mordvinic *-ža + *-ka.
