From -en- + -ský. In Proto-Slavic *ę-stems, the nasal vowel ę cleared into en (the nasal element became explicit) when followed by a suffix beginning with a vowel due to the law of open syllables. See also the Usage notes at *-ьce. Also compare with forms like dievča → dievčence.
