From Proto-Polynesian *kofa-ŋa (“nest”), equivalent to ʻohā (“taro corm growing from the older root”) + -na (nominalizing suffix). Cognate with Māori kōhanga (“nest”), Rarotongan koʻanga (“nest”), Samoan ōfaga (“nest”), Tahitian ofaaraa (“nest”).
