Place name of the mountain from the One-Horned Mountain Goat traditional story, also given to the older brother bringing gifts down from that mountain. Possibly from ugʷ(ala) (“acquire a treasure”) + -ala (“agentive”) + -əs (“continuously”). Translated as "the place where people are blessed".

The Latin characters uppercase U+A7DA and lowercase U+A7DB were added to the Unicode Standard 16.0 released on 10 September 2024 (Delta Code Charts, Latin Extended-D, Range: A720–A7FF). Before their adoption, only the Greek character λ U+03BB was available to represent the letter used in Latin orthographies, λugʷaləs was or is written with the Greek character.
The Liqʼwala orthography used by the name is usually bicameral and has capital letters for proper nouns, ugʷaləs with the Latin uppercase may be adequate, ugʷaləs with the Latin lowercase may occur being similar to λugʷaləs with the Greek lowercase.
