From țară (“country, land”) + -ean, from Latin terra (“land, earth”), or Inherited from Vulgar Latin *terriānus, from Latin terra + -iānus. Given the presence of -an- instead of -ân-, the initial form must have been țărean (which is now archaic or dialectal).
