Inherited from Ottoman Turkish اورتمك (örtmek, “to cover, wrap, veil, shut”) from Old Anatolian Turkish اورتمك (örtmek), from Proto-Turkic *ört- (“to cover”).
Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (ört-, “to cover”), Azerbaijani örtmək (“to cover, shut”), Chuvash витме (vitme, “to cover, protect, close”), Turkmen örtmek (“to cover”), Salar öttgüsi, Gagauz örtmää.
