In 1931, Sacheverell Sitwell wrote that the architecture of the European palaces was the opposite to chinoiserie, an oriental variation on Western themes; while later George N. Kates qualified them of “an experiment in Européennerie”, an eighteenth century counterpart to the chinoiserie which flourished exuberantly in all the court [sic : courts] of Europe at the time.
