zufrieden
التعريفات والمعاني
== German ==
=== Etymology ===
Since ca. 1500, from univerbation of zu + Frieden, literally “at peace”. Likely a calque of Middle Low German tô vrēde(n), Middle Dutch te vrēden (modern Dutch tevreden), both of which date from the 13th century. Apart from the dating, this is also confirmed by the fact that the earliest High German attestations are from Hesse and the Rhineland.
=== Pronunciation ===
IPA(key): [t͡suˈfʁiːdn̩], [-dən], (colloquial also) [t͡sə-]
=== Adjective ===
zufrieden (strong nominative masculine singular zufriedener, comparative zufriedener, superlative am zufriedensten)
satisfied, content, happy (with something)
Antonym: unzufrieden
Bist du mit deiner neuen Wohnung zufrieden? ― Are you satisfied with your new apartment?
Man kann nicht alle zufrieden stellen. ― You can't keep everyone satisfied.
==== Usage notes ====
In northwestern Germany, especially Westphalia, the idiomatic collocation gut zufrieden is commonly used to express a vague emphasis. Elsewhere this would be ganz / sehr / vollkommen zufrieden.
