The first element, which was originally the Germanic prefix *sin- (“everlasting, eternal”) (compare zenegroen), was folk-etymologically reinterpreted to yield a compound zonde (“sin”) +‎ vloed (“flood”), as the biblical Deluge was the result of human sinfulness.
