=== Etymology ===
From Middle Dutch sintvloed, from Middle High German sintvluot. The first element, which was originally the Germanic prefix *sin- (“everlasting, eternal”) (compare zenegroen), was folk-etymologically reinterpreted to yield a compound zonde (“sin”) + vloed (“flood”), as the biblical Deluge was the result of human sinfulness. Cognate to German Sintflut, also Sündflut.
