Borrowed from a South Slavic or West Slavic language, from Proto-Slavic *slězъ (“mallow”) (compare Serbo-Croatian сље̏з / sljȅz (“mallow”), Czech sléz (“mallow”), Slovak slez (“mallow”), Slovene slẹ̑z (“mallow”)). Possibly ultimately from Proto-Indo-European [Term?], compare Old High German slihhan (“to crawl”), Old Norse [Term?] (“smooth, slippery”). First attested in c. 1790.
